Legends Cars history was made at the USA Snetterton 300 event on Sunday, 26th July, where Tyler Read (Daventry) became the first driver to successfully defend the coveted Elite Cup title – victory in the fifth of the weekend’s six races enough to seal the crown with one race to spare.

Elated to claim the first of this year’s titles, Read was his usual rapid self in rounds five and six of the Elite Cup, rounds nine and 10 of the Legends Cars Championship, and did what he needed in order to see off Aaron Cooke (Croxley Green), Chris Needham (Altrincham) and Oli Schlup (Cuckfield).

Needham produced a true Legends racing masterclass around the Norfolk venue’s 2.97-mile 300 Circuit. First matching his 2024 feat of achieving three wins in a day on Saturday, 25th July, he then took two more victories on Sunday and only missed out to Read by 0.020 seconds in the other. In doing so, Needham has moved to the top of the overall Legends Cars Championship standings.

Peter Barrable (Dublin) retained his Elite Cup Masters Cup class title, by a mere 15 points from Andy Bird (Calne) who chalked up four Masters wins across the weekend. The other Masters class victors were John Mickel (Copthorne) and Nick Price (March).

Nathan Williams (Higher Bebington) is the 2026 Elite Cup Rookie Cup winner, and the No.5 car of Mickel Motorsport, piloted this weekend by Nick Bridgeman (Baldock), claims the Team Car title – the other driver to have raced the No.5 in this year’s Elite Cup was Mark Reid at Donington Park.

Sensational Needham repeats Snetterton triple
Race one of the weekend started with a familiar name on the front row, returning 2020 Legends Cars title winner Daniel Clark (Darras Hall), and while he launched well in the No.52 Team Car it was reigning Champion Read who surged from fourth to the lead. By the end of lap one Cooke, up from sixth, was right behind Read and after a remarkable first tour Needham had risen from 14th to third.

Needham swiftly moved into the lead on the second tour and thereafter the fight for the win was between those three, shuffling positions several times. Into the sixth and final lap it was Needham from Read and Cooke, Read hit the front at the Esses but on the drag to the line Needham won by a tenth as Read pipped Cooke by 0.040s. In a strong fourth, Bird won the Masters class.

Needham started a loftier fifth for Heat Two and, yet again, wasted no time in slicing his way through the order. This time, the Snetterton supremo had installed himself at the head of the train by the time they arrived at Palmer, turn three, and at the end of lap one he was a second clear of Schlup, Matt Knight (Shoreham by Sea), Bird and Read – the latter up from 15th on the grid.

As Needham stayed out front the pressure built, and with three laps to go Schlup and Read were right with him. Read took the lead for the first time on lap four, while Bird and Cooke joined the party, but into the final lap Needham led once more. With nothing to split the quintet, Needham was able to win again by a whisker from Schlup, Cooke and Bird, with Read fifth after a last lap issue.

All of the main contenders from the Heats, of course, began the Saturday Final from the rear of the grid and none made a better job of the first lap than Needham. Starting 18th and last, he rocketed to second place behind leader Marcus Pett (Boston), who himself had moved up from row six.

On lap two, though, a multi-car incident at Williams resulted in a red flag stoppage. Following a short delay, the race re-started over six laps with Needham leading while, further behind, a tangle at Wilson Hairpin involving Barrable and Luke Simmons (Lingfield) led to retirement for Simmons.

Needham, Read and Cooke traded first place, and by the end of lap four Schlup had reeled the trio in after passing Pett. Going into the final tour Needham led from Read, Cooke and Schlup, the latter then made his move for third through the infield. Any one of the lead quartet could win, but Needham did it again from Read and Schlup, as Cooke’s car slowed and dropped to fifth behind Pett.

Read wraps-up Elite crown as Needham aces two more wins
Aside from the title battle, the big question heading into Sunday’s action was whether Needham could continue his remarkable run of success. Going into Heat One his back was up, having received a 50 point penalty linked to some racing contact in the Saturday Final, and he responded brilliantly.

Schlup, from third on the grid, quickly moved into the lead as Needham surged from ninth to second within the first couple of corners. Moving past Schlup through the infield, another superb battle then developed between those two and Cooke – who had risen from 11th. Read, starting 16th, charged through and by the time he was fourth, on lap four, he had 2.5s to make up.

Reeling off fastest laps, Read continued to catch the lead trio as Needham headed Cooke and Schlup into the last lap. Cooke grabbed the lead at Riches and still led as they exited Murrays, but Needham yet again judged it perfectly to pull out from the draft and win by a tenth from Cooke, Schlup third and Read right there in fourth. Price raced very strongly to the Masters class victory in sixth.

Read began Heat Two from pole and led cleanly at the rolling start, actually making a bit of a break initially. Needham, as ever, sliced through the pack with ease and from eighth he was second before the end of the first lap. Catching Read over the next couple of laps, they diced superbly to the finish.

Bird ran in third place and Cooke soon paired off with the Masters runner as they engaged in a fantastic scrap. Needham and Read did trade the lead, and once more the decisive moment came with the drive out of the final corner on the last lap – Read able to just pip his rival by 0.020s. Bird similarly shaded Cooke by 0.041s for third, while Schlup won a terrific five car battle for fifth.

After the glory of retaining his Elite Cup title in the previous race, Read hoped to sign off in strong style in the Sunday Final. Contact, though, on the opening lap required a trip to the pits for a fresh tyre and meant an eventual finish of 15th place. Meanwhile, Needham stormed through from the back to be eighth by the end of the opening tour, and he then took the lead on lap two.

Cooke also made star progress through the pack, rising to second by lap four and then mounting a big challenge to Needham. Glued together lap after lap, on the drag to the line on the eighth tour they were side-by-side at the flag. It was too close to call by the timing equipment and went to a photo finish, Needham awarded the win by a millimetre – one of Legends’ closest ever results. In third was Schlup, a mere 0.036s ahead of Bird who was a second clear of Mickel.

“I’m really happy, this one means a lot! It’s been a tough year, due to reasons out of our own hands really, so to get the Elite Cup done takes a lot of pressure off my shoulders. Chris [Needham] has done amazing this weekend, so I think he’s pulled back a fair bit in the championship. I played it a bit safe on Saturday, just trying to get the Elite Cup done, and now we’ll push on for the Championship.”

“I wasn’t expecting this, with Tyler [Read], Aaron [Cooke] and Oli [Schlup] on the grid, the four of us have just been neck and neck everywhere we’ve raced. Everywhere else it’s been the luck of the draw, who was in the right place, but round here you can put yourself in the right place a lot easier. I’ve just been making it work, I’ve done it both ways here – dragging up to the line and leading out of the last corner. I just love this place! I love the speed, it’s fast and it’s technical. High speed chess!”

The Legends Cars Elite Cup may have concluded for another year, but there are still three rounds remaining in this year’s Legends Cars Championship. Round 11 will take place at Oulton Park in Cheshire on Saturday, 22nd August.
