Six outstanding races from the Legends Cars Championship at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit over the weekend, 6th/7th June, delivered absolutely thrilling entertainment as part of the annual American Speedfest – and also produced five different winners across rounds seven and eight of the season.
Reigning champion Tyler Read (Daventry) emerged from the fourth event of 2026 with an enhanced points lead, taking his fifth win of the year in Sunday’s round eight Final, as another excellent outing from Chris Needham (Altrincham) delivered his sixth win and lifted him to second in the standings.
Two victories on a rain-hit Saturday for Aaron Cooke (Croxley Green) meant he and Read were all-but neck and neck at the top of the championship. But a luckless round eight, including retirement from the Final, means Cooke has slipped to fourth in the points.
Masters Cup class leader Peter Barrable (Dublin) opened the weekend with his first outright victory of the campaign in Heat One of round seven, and he claimed three class wins in total. Of the other Masters class victories, Andy Bird (Calne) raced to two while John Mickel (Copthorne) claimed one.
American racer Trevor Krouse, who made his British debut during last season’s visit to Croft in North Yorkshire where he claimed a superb win, returned for another one-off at this weekend’s Speedfest and produced a memorable showing with victory in the first of Sunday’s races.
Outside the aforementioned race winners, other drivers to finish on the overall podium included Oli Schlup (Cuckfield) with five rostrum results – lifting him to third in the championship – and Marcus Pett (Boston).
Barrable blasts off in Rd7 Heat One, Cooke then does the double
From fourth on a greasy grid in Heat One on Saturday, Mickel quickly made his way to the head of the pack past Ross Marshall (Stirling) as Needham, from sixth, rocketed around the outside at Paddock Hill Bend to move into contention. Behind, Read also made progress from ninth while Barrable was right in the mix as well.
Needham took the lead on lap two and fended off allcomers, until the decisive moment on the final tour. He headed Read, Barrable, Pett and Schlup but after encountering a backmarker all bets were off. Barrable chose the correct gap as he, Needham and Read went three abreast, and won by 0.076s on the line. Schlup nipped into second, a mega drive from 19th, with Needham third from Mickel.
Schlup had drawn pole for Heat Two, conditions worse than earlier with a much wetter track, but Bird from the second row launched superbly and went around the outside at Paddock to grab the lead. Schlup hit back on lap two but Bird then re-challenged, and as they fought so Cooke closed in and soon took second from Schlup.
Cooke made his move to pass Bird at half-distance and within a lap had opened a lead of 1.6s as, behind, Schlup pressured Bird. After regaining second, Schlup chased down the leader but waved yellows at Druids late-on due to a car in the gravel did take away a passing opportunity. Ultimately, Cooke held on for victory from Schlup, with Read demoting Bird to fourth on the final tour.
The round seven Final was also a wet race, showers persisting, with all sorts of drama on the first lap. Bird moved into the lead quickly, as Pett stormed into the top three from 12th on the grid, but several expected front-runners were caught-up in incidents – including Read and Mickel. Then, at the start of lap two, another car off at Paddock Hill Bend brought out the Safety Car.
Racing resumed on lap six and there was instant drama again, Bird sliding off at Paddock from the lead and making contact with the barriers – thankfully unharmed. Pett move into first but he was soon challenged by Cooke, the Heat Two winner taking control as Pett came under huge pressure from Schlup who had charged from the back.
Schlup made the breakthrough to take second on lap 13 and he reeled off fastest lap pace to close Cooke’s lead from 1.5 seconds to nothing in the space of a lap. In the end, Cooke just saw him off on lap 15 by a tenth, with Pett back on the podium in third from Needham, Barrable and Krouse.
Krouse stars with win, Needham and Read also take victories
Cooke drew pole for the dry Heat One on Sunday and led from Nathan Williams (Higher Bebington), before Mickel passed the Rookie class leader. Into Druids, though, Marshall’s car was launched into multiple rolls after contact from which he thankfully emerged unscathed.
Following the obvious Safety Car period racing resumed on lap six and Mickel made his move on Cooke at Clearways. Rebuffing an immediate re-challenge, Mickel stayed ahead until the end of lap eight when Cooke nosed back past to lead again. Krouse, having come through from 12th on the grid, took second from Mickel at the start of lap nine and then passed Cooke at Druids.
Into lap 10 Cooke was right there but Krouse managed to open a half second gap and stayed far enough ahead to seal victory on lap 12. Cooke was elbowed down to seventh on the final tour, as Pett just held off Needham on the line for second and Bird finished as top Master in fourth.
Luke Simmons (Lingfield) started Heat Two from pole but Needham surged into the lead on the run to Druids, before Simmons hit back soon after. Schlup took second on lap three, but the order changed again in no time with Needham back in first ahead of Schlup, Simmons, Read and Krouse.
On lap seven Schlup squeezed past Needham into Druids and the lead train of six had nothing between them. Schlup led Read and Needham onto the 10th and final lap, but out of Clearways it was Needham who pounced as the two ahead battled. Motoring to the win on the line, Needham was a tenth clear of Read who pipped Schlup for second and Simmons placed fourth.
Marshall, in his miraculously repaired car, led away in the round eight Final as, behind, Schlup, Simmons and Nick Price (March) all scattered across the road at Druids. Marshall continued to lead and soon came under pressure from Mickel, but the Scot stayed ahead as yet more drama kicked off behind, an incident involving Cooke, David Bonser (Tamworth) and Williams.
Just before the Safety Car was deployed Krouse had taken the lead and he made a perfect re-start on lap seven, pulling 0.6 seconds clear of Mickel. Just behind, Needham was battling over sixth with Barrable and unfortunate contact came at Paddock – so they ended 12th and 11th respectively.
The race had an extended distance of 16 laps and Krouse looked well on course for another win, but Read chipped away – having stormed from the back. Into the final tour he was in striking distance and the pair produced one of the very best last lap battles of the season – if not the decade!
Going two wide into Paddock Hill Bend, side-by-side into Druids and down through the left at Graham Hill Bend, there was still nothing to choose as they ran wheel-to-wheel into Surtees and around Clearways. On the run to the flag, Read just pipped Krouse by a mere 0.044s. Just behind, Schlup fought back super-impressively to claim third with Mickel the top Master in fourth.
Peter Barrable – Rd7 Heat One Winner:
“I’m absolutely delighted…the backmarker made it very interesting! I went for the middle, hoped for the best and got through. We’ve been knocking on the door but in Legends racing you’re due nothing, you can be fifth in every race or win every race and have the same speed. It’s brilliant to get the outright win, here at Brands Hatch and the Speedfest is that little bit special.”
Aaron Cooke – Rd7 Heat Two and Rd7 Final Winner:
“We’d been praying for rain all day, I enjoy the rain a lot more, and hopefully it showed in that one [Rd7 Heat Two]. We got to the front, didn’t want to over-drive it as it’s easy to just push it a tiny bit too much and go off. I knew Oli [Schlup] was there but if I stuck to the right line there was no way he was going to get past. It’s great to have a couple of wins.”
Trevor Krouse – Rd8 Heat One Winner:
“The car was awesome, it was really good. We made our way up through the field, started 12th, made up a bunch of spots through the first couple of laps and after the Safety Car we kept picking through, ended up out front and pulled away which was awesome. I can’t thank the [Luke] Simmons crew enough for getting this car dialed in, it’s really fast.”
Chris Needham – Rd8 Heat Two Winner:
“That was a great clean race, me and Oli [Schlup] were trying to get away from Tyler [Read] to give ourselves a bit of space, but Tyler hung on. They both got past me coming onto the last lap, but I thought I’ll just see what happens. Luckily I just made it work out of the last corner, they both went in a bit hard battling each other and I just took advantage.”
Tyler Read – Rd8 Final Winner:
“Finally I’ve got a win this weekend! What a race, that’s definitely up there as one of my best races ever. We got held up a bit with John [Mickel] and the gap was big, and Trevor [Krouse] was really quick to be fair to him. I didn’t think he was catchable, but managed to get there – and what a scrap in the end! It was hard, but really fair racing and a really good result.”
Legends Cars drivers and teams now head into a seven-week early summer break ahead of rounds nine and 10 of the season over the weekend 25th/26th July at Snetterton in Norfolk. The event will also act as the final two rounds of this year’s coveted Legends Cars Elite Cup.
